Local Business Listings – This Works

Ok, its been a little while since I updated here, but most of my recent updates have been happening over at my personal blog here www.jamiegarside.com , but I thought I would share this here as well!
Some of you may remember at the end of last year I sent a video out to my list showing you how I put together Local Business Listings. This video had mixed reactions, as Google changed their TOS as I sent the video out, literally straight after, so many believed the techniques wouldn’t work!
Well,
This morning I called up one of my clients for our regular monthly call regarding my SEO efforts for his company and I was excited to show him Google Maps!
Why?
Because, his website and listing was sat in POSITION A on Google Maps and had only been their about a week, so he hadn’t seen it yet. Not only was it POSTION A (Number 1) for one keyword but it was actually NUMBER 1 (POSTION A) for every keyword to do with his business. The definition of TOTAL DOMINATION to say the least!
Anyway, although I was excited to show him the results and that we were not only dominating Page 1 organically for his website but we were also now dominating Google Maps, which he hadn’t done before, I was also excited to let you guys know about this.
Why?
Because I am sat number 1, not just for his listing, but for many more, using the SAME techniques I covered in the video I sent out at the end of last year, proving these techniques do indeed work!
HOWEVER!
There is a BIG BUT, and something I have found out, which I see does play a big part in the local business listings with my experience. Putting up a listing is not the be all and end all, BACKLINKS play a major part.
You see the website I used in the video example doesn’t have many backlinks, it has a few but not too many and to this date doesn’t appear in the map listings. But using the same techniques on my clients websites that have bucketloads of BACKLINKS pointing to them has shot them into the top A-G, as it is now.
This proves that the techniques I use work, but that BACKLINKS do indeed play a MAJOR PART in all of this.
I am not talking magic backlinks or a certain type of backlink either. I am talking the usual, Articles, Profile Links, Social Bookmarks, Press Releases etc. but the sites I have built listings for that have a welath of backlinks, dominate the tops of Google Local Listings everytime, which is AWESOME.
So, I want to link up the video again for you guys, so you can watch it again to see how I build my listings!
THE LOCAL LISTING BUILDING VIDEO
Again, this was shot in November last year, but these same techniques have worked for my clients sites, with proof as recent as this week. After constructing your listing, all you need is backlinks to your clients site and watch what happens!
**ANOTHER ADDED TIP**
As another added tip here when it comes to selling this service or offering this service to your clients is to NEVER GUARANTEE a top page listing in Local Google Listings!
Why?
Because even though the likelihood is that you will achieve it, YOU MAY NOT, nothing is guaranteed. I let my clients know that I have a technique that works 9 out of 10 times but isn’t Guaranteed. This way you are not promising something that is out of your control for some part. Also, when it happens to come to fruition, you are seen as OVERDELIVERING which is awesome for TRUST BUILDING!
Just an added tip there for you guys to remember!
Anyway, watch the video again, and put these techniques to work on a site or a clients site of your and wait for the results.
As far as a time scale goes, some of my lisitings were achieved within 7 days, while other have take 2 months, but they still hit the top which is the GOAL!

So Jamie if my client doesn’t have a lot of backlinks and I do the things you suggested in your video will my listing show up in the pack seven of Google Business Listings? Or will I need build up my client’s website backlinks just to keep in him in the pack seven of GBL.

Hey Steve,
Well, what I have found so far is backlinks play a major role, as the sites I have setup vvia the video with backlinks and with added backlinks, hit the top 7, but the sites with ZERO links or very little links struggle to get in there.
So, if you follow the video, build quality links to your clients website, you will have a good chance of landing in there, YES!
I consistetly build backlinks to my clients sites anyway, but even if you don’t, once you get into GBL, you tend to be cemented, from my experience!

Hmm – I was wondering what had happned to the google local results – I use exactly the same techniques as yourself and last year all of my listings would be on the front page without a doubt – But now its not as simple as that. I thought they had actually changed the algo so that it picks out the closest local listing to the IP of the user. But your theory seems to be different. I will get one of my assistants to give it a go – However we always create backlinks to our clients websites so not sure how this will be reflected on the google maps. I would have understood if you said to create backlinks to the actual Google map url. Sorry to sound confusing but hope it makes sense. By the way I love the accent – I used to live in Birmingham – Solihull for a few years

Hey Abs,
Yes, there has been many theories and things said about GBL’s, they are certainly a mystery to SEO giants!
However, I post this on my experience. These techniques were questioned last year, but low and behold, its working for me with every site I do it with.
The only thing that was different between listings were backlinks. My heavily backlinked client sites hit A-G everytime and still do, with one going in this week at Number 1!
I also thought about the location thing, but the one that has gone in this week is out of the local area. Still in the area, but out of the centre and beats listings that are in the centre of the city, so this shows location isn’t the name of the game entirely!
Also, REVIEWS seem to play a big part. Not just 1 or 2 reviews but a decent amount of reviews on a listing i.e 10 or above seems to have some weight aswell! ; )
But, this is still being tested, so didn’t want to talk to much about untested theories.
I can only post and talk about what I have used and what works for me!

I have purchased your local seo magic product and have a question.
1. How do you get access to the clients website to change title , header and meta tags? I know how to do this for a wordpress site, but not an html site.

On a similar issue I have got to congratulate you on ‘Optimal WP’. I have just been through the whole course. It’s very comprehensive and an absolute steal at the price! I realize this isn’t an exact science, but do you have any educated guesses as far as why the wide variations in the time scale – is it perhaps because some sites are new vs old, etc? Thanks

thanks for the info ..always nice to hear from you ..I have found that the ‘citations’ and reviews are a quick method to use to validate the account with google…get people to give you reviews in exchange for you doing reviews for their sites. or hire it out.

John – I don’t charge just for this service. My Google Map Listing service is part of my SEO service which is a setup and monthly fee!
Carl – For access to sites to change the page titles and meta data, you will need a HTML editor. I use dreamweaver but there are free ones available. I haven’t used free ones, so cant really point you in the right direction there.
But, once you have a HTML editor, you will need your clients FTP details so you can download there HTML web pages. You can then simply open the downloaded pages within your HTML editor and add the page titles etc. hit “SAVE” and reupload the web pages!
Joe – I am not sure on that one. I have had such diverse results as far as time scale goes, I couldn’t put my finger on it!
